Club Meetings
The Rowan Rotary Club meets each Thursday morning at 7am at the Holiday Inn in Salisbury on Jake Alexander Blvd.
A full breakfast is served. The cost for guests is $7.
Below is a summary of our past meetings
Date: 3/29/2012 - Two cardiologists from Rowan Regional Medical Center (RRMC) came to speak about heart health, and the state-of-the-art services that RRMC provides to this community. Dr. Apur Kamdar and Dr. Telly Meadows are two of the absolute best cardiologists in this country, and they work right here in our town. We are so lucky to have them, and we were so honored to have them take the time to speak to us about one of the most vital organs in our body.
Date: 3/22/2012 - Doug Rice, the president of the Performance Racing Network (PRN) gave an awesome presentation outlining the work his team does for several of the NASCAR races throughout the year. Doug and his wife are Salisbury natives, and Doug is world renowned for the work he has done on the radio for just about his entire life. He brings the race to the fans no matter where they are, and most of us remarked how races on the radio can be more exciting than they are on television or even in real life.
Date: 3/15/2012 - As part of the club's 25th anniversary celebration, we hosted Wayne Clawson at the Meroney Theater in Salisbury. Wayne presented his one-man-show titled "The Shooting of Dan McGrew". He theatrically recited poetry from the famous Scottish poet Robert William Service. Club members met at various local restaurants prior to the show to support our local economy. The night was filled with fun and laughs. Wayne Clawson is an absolute gem and we are honored to have him come to celebrate with us.
Date: 3/8/2012 - Club member Greg Pizzuto, the assistant general manager for the Kannapolis Intimidators gave a presentation on the upcoming events at the stadium this season. To learn move about Intimidators Baseball, check out their website: www.intimidatorsbaseball.com.
Date: 3/1/2012 - Dr. Chris Nagy, a local Orthopaedic Surgeon, joined us to speak about over health and wellness. His website can be found at http://yourpersonalwellnesscenter.com/ . Dr. Nagy is passionate about real wellness rather than just treating the symptom. He had the club captivated with his open and honest advice concerning ways to improve our wellness and well-being. A big thanks to Dr. Nagy for taking the time to come speak to us!
Date: 2/23/2012 - The morning meeting was cancelled in light of the fact that our 25th anniversary dinner was held in the evening. The dinner was hosted by the Rowan Museum at the old Rowan County courthouse. The event was catered by Debbie Suggs and the food was fantastic! Lots of fun and laughs were had as we chronicled the history of the club through pictures and stories. It was a memorable evening and a great way to celebrate 25th years of service above self in Rowan County.
Date: 2/16/2012 - Coach Scott Young from West Rowan High school inspired the club with his stories of servant leadership to the parents and students of WR High. We are truly blessed to have such a man leading some of our young men both on and off of the football field. Coach Young is a native of Salisbury and he's continuing to sow the seeds of love, faith, and family in our community.
Date: 2/9/2012 - New club members Rita Foil, Wes Thompson, and Miriam Basso each took a few moments to share with the club the history of their lives up to this point. Each speaker was uniquely entertaining and enlightening.
Date: 2/2/2012 - Wilson Cherry from Rowan Vocational Opportunities was the presenting speaker at this meeting. He was inspirational and extremely motivating.
Date: 1/26/2012 - Our club was extremely fortunate to have Coach Andrew Mitchell from North Rowan High School as our keynote speaker. Coach Mitchell is highly respected in the school system for his remarkable ability to lead our youth to amazing accomplishments, both on and off of the playing field. The principal of North Rowan, Darrel McDowell, also attended the meeting and had some glowing comments about Coach Mitchell. During this meeting, we inducted Rita Foil, the Public Information Officer for the Rowan Salisbury School System into the club. We also inducted Craig Powers newborn twins into the club as honorary members. Ella and Lane were born just a few weeks ago. The club presented two beautiful hand-made wooden toy boxes to the Powers family. These babies were the first born to an active club member in as long as anyone can remember.
Date: 1/19/2012 - Jeanne Dixon from the North Carolina Guardian Ad Litem program spoke to the club about the importance of this program in which volunteers become a child's advocate when they are in foster care. You can learn more at www.ncgal.com.
Date: 1/12/2012 - A video presentation was shown of Jennifer Jones speaking at the 2011 PETS conference. Jennifer told some touching stories of how important Rotary is to the world and I believe that it challenged each of us to do more with Rotary.
Date 1/5/2012 - Army SSGT Dusty Cline, a China Grove native, chronicled his 11 years in the Army which consisted of multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. SSGT Cline is a Military Police officer, a devoted husband, and a father of 4 beautiful children. His stories of heroism were told in the most humble and mild manner, but it was easy to see that this was a hard-charging soldier who was razor sharp on the battlefield. We were truly honored to have SSGT Cline join us along with his wife and his mother. This was but one story of the millions of service members that put their life on the line for us each and every day.

Date: 12/15/2011 - Kevin Boyle entertained us all with his Karaoke machine as we sang along to Christmas favorites. Kevin had the club rolling on the floor laughing with his wild rendition of George Michael's 80's classic "Careless Whisper". iPhones were in full force video taping this performance for posterity! A great time was had by all.
Date: 12/08/2011 - There was no club meeting this morning due to the Service Above Self Awards that were held in the evening at Catawba College. The Keppel Auditorium was filled to capacity as the community honored our K-12 students for the great works they are doing at home and abroad. It was truly a sight to see!

Date: 11/17/2011 - Jim Duncan and Greg Dunn shared the overwhelming success story of our 2011 Spooky Sprint 5K race.
Date: 11/10/2011 - Phil Kepley opened the meeting by recognizing all of the veterans in the club. He asked them to come up front and he shared some kind words about the meaning of their service. He also lead a moment of silence in honor of all of our military. Randy Hemann, the executive director of Downtown Salisbury Inc. gave a presentation of the proposed Rowan Salisbury School System's new building which would be on the corner of Horah and S. Main St. He discussed the cost benefits and esthetic benefits of the new building. The Rowan-Salisbury school system currently operates out of five geographically separated locations. Having all of the RSSS administrative functions consolidated into one location will be a huge improvement to the operation of the school system.
Date: 11/3/2011 - Nick Langdon opened the meeting with a prayer and the pledge of allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America. Nick shared a little bit about his life with the club members. Deon van den Berg was inducted into the club, sponsored by Kay Dover. Monica Foster, the owner of Butterfly Wheel Motivation, Advocacy, and Consulting, spoke about accommodating employees with disabilities. Monica is an advocate for people who are facing the challenges of all sorts of disabilities in life. Her website is www.butterflywheel.com.
Date: 10/27/2011 - Craig Powers opened the meeting with prayer and pledge. Master Gardener Darrell Blackwelder spoke about how to care for our lawns and trees in the fall months. He added his signature humor to his excellent advice which had us rolling in laughter. It was a great way to start the day. The Spooky Sprint 5K is this weekend, and Greg Dunn came in dressed as a ghoul. He drew tickets and gave out Krispy Kreme doughnuts and a bottle of Cheerwine. This year's 5K is projected to have a 50% higher attendance than last year and will definitely be a lot of fun.
